144: Phantom invented stock
Dave Nichols, 15/07/2004

A feature has been added to build 21.2.3 (not released yet). The feature is referred to as "Phantom Stock" and is the term used to describe a material catalogue item that has not got an acquisition method (i.e. it is not a bought item or a manufactured item or a service).

Previously, an attempt to use such a material in a method would result in the schedule of that method failing. With the new feature, instead of failing, the system will 'invent' it. An item invented like this is very similar to a purchased item except you do not need to order it, it can be booked-in against any supplier without first having to raise an order for it.

A separate schedule of these items is maintained, so you can easily find any requirement for phantom items.

A new default has been added to allow you to turn this feature off if you want to keep the existing behaviour. The new default is "Allow Parts With No Method" (in the XP group), setting this to NO will restore the old behaviour.
