152: Displaying objects as short name and long name
Colin Jenkins, 21/09/2004

A new Yes/No default has been added to the ZV (system types) module called Value long name clip and is associated with displaying long and short names for objects in a display field.

The factory setting of No provides exactly the same behaviour as your existing build; that is, to completely supress the long name if the whole long name does not fit into the display field. This can be irritating because it means that sometimes the long name is shown and sometimes it is not.

If you change the value to Yes, the long name is clipped to fit in the display field, loosing some of the trailing characters.

The new default will available in build 21.2.6. As yet there is no release date for this build.

For example consider a material with short name "C90234A/X" and long name "230mm diameter bar". Displayed in a large field together with the standard long name prefix and suffix strings (which are also controlled by defaults), it looks like this:-

C90234A/X---(( 230mm diameter bar ))

In your current build and with the new default set to the factory setting of No, if the material is displayed in a field such that the whole above string does not fit (say a field of 24 characters), the long name and its prefix/suffix is completely supressed. Match-IT will display:-

C90234A/X

However, by setting the new default to Yes, the long name and its prefix/suffix is shown, but clipped to remove those trailing characters that do not fit. So for our 24 character display field example, Match-IT would show:-

C90234A/X---(( 230mm dia

We are extending the length of hundreds of display fields as we move through the system, but in the interim this default (and its associated defaults) gives you some control over how object names are displayed.
